The European Union (EU) is introducing a new border system called the Entry/Exit System (EES), expected to start in October 2025. This system will automate border checks for people traveling to and from the EU.
Instead of stamping passports, the system will scan travelers’ fingerprints and take photos when they enter or leave the EU.
This will help track how long visitors stay and catch people who overstay their visas.
Non-EU travelers, including tourists from the UK, USA, and other countries, who don’t need a visa for short visits.
If you visit Europe often, you may need to register your details the first time you enter.
Longer waits at the border are expected at first, especially at busy airports and ferry terminals.
People driving to the EU, such as those crossing from the UK to France, may face delays while their information is recorded.
This system is part of the EU’s efforts to improve border security and immigration control. It will later be linked to ETIAS, a separate travel authorization system launching in 2026.
